"ONE OF THE EARLIEST ATTEMPTS AT IMPARTIALITY IN ACCOUNTING FOR THE TENSIONS WHICH LED TO THE CIVIL WAR IN ENGLAND": L'ESTRANGE'S CONTROVERSIAL REIGN OF KING CHARLES, 1655 FIRST EDITION

(CHARLES I) L'ESTRANGE, Hamon. The Reign of King Charles: An History, Faithfully and Impartially Delivered and Disposed into Annals. London: Printed by E.C. for Edward Dod, and Henry Seile the younger, 1655. Small folio (7 by 10-1/2 inches), period-style full dark brown calf, raised bands, red morocco spine labels.

First edition of this controversial history of Charles I from 1625 until the execution of the Earl of Strafford, whose trial is described in some detail, in 1641: "claimed as one of the earliest attempts at impartiality in accounting for the tensions which led to the civil war in England" (ODNB).

Described by Thomas Fuller as a "handsome history likely to prove as acceptable to posterity as it hath done to the present age" and by the Quarterly Review as "a book of considerable merit," Hamon L'Estrange's work incensed theologian Peter Heylyn and ignited a contentious exchange of written attacks (DNB XI, 995). "This has been claimed as one of the earliest attempts at impartiality in accounting for the tensions which led to the civil war in England. Certainly L'Estrange himself believed that he was setting the record straight by offering 'a modest vindication of this King in some particulars, not reflecting upon the fatal proceedings against him'" (ODNB). L'Estrange (1605-60) was a royalist who fought in the early part of the Civil War before being reconciled to Parliament in 1644. Though a Calvinist, he supported the Church of England. Bound without engraved additional title page with vignette of Charles by W. Faithorne; letterpress title page present, text complete. ESTC R7562. Wing L1189. Lowndes, 1346.

Minor soiling to title page; last leaf of Table of Contents remargined, just touching typographical border, minor marginal soiling to generally clean text. Period-style calf binding fine.
