"REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MAJOR AMERICAN WRITERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY": FINE SIGNED LIMITED EDITION SET OF WILLA CATHER'S WORKS

CATHER, Willa. The Novels and Stories of Willa Cather. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1937-38. Thirteen volumes. Octavo, original half beige cloth, black morocco labels, navy cloth boards, top edges gilt, uncut and partially unopened, original oversized dust jackets.

Autograph edition, number 402 of 970 copies signed by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather, with five photogravure portraits and five facsimiles of manuscripts as frontispieces—a fine set in scarce original oversized dust jackets.

Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1922, Cather "is regarded as one of America's finest writers of fiction." Wallace Stevens wrote of Cather in 1940: "We have nothing better than she is" (Columbia Companion, 198). "She knew at the end that she was leaving behind a significant body of work, including 12 novels and 58 stories. Politically active critics in the sociological 1930s charged her with writing escapist fiction, but in the years after World War II her stature grew steadily. She is generally regarded as one of the major American writers of the 20th century" (ANB). Beautifully printed on laid paper.

Expected edge-wear to oversized dust jackets, a bit of toning to spines. Volumes clean and fine. A superb set in the original dust jackets.
