HANDSOME EARLY 13TH-CENTURY ILLUMINATED LEAF FROM A FRENCH BIBLE FEATURING TEXT FROM THE BOOK OF MACCABEES, WITH BLUE AND RED INITIAL AND SCROLLWORK

(ILLUMINATED LEAF). Illuminated leaf from a Medieval Bible. France, circa 1220. Single vellum leaf, measuring 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches, scribed in black and red inks, illuminated in red and blue inks. Window matted, entire piece measures 8 by 10 inches.

Lovely illuminated leaf from an early 13th-century French Bible, scribed in 92 lines of fine Gothic Latin divided into double columns, with one four-line initial in red and blue and complementary scrollwork.

This leaf from a French bible, circa 1220, features text from the Book of Maccabees. It is scribed in two columns of fine microscopic Gothic Latin script, each 46 lines long. There is a blue four-line initial "D" with red embellishment and additional scrollwork. The verso is similar with a smaller two-line initial.

Marginal chip to lower corner not affecting text. Most desirable.
