OTTO EGE’S EXTRAORDINARY COLLECTION OF 60 LEAVES FROM FAMOUS AND IMPORTANT BIBLES, 1121-1935

BIBLE. Original Leaves from Famous Bibles, Nine Centuries 1121-1935 A. D. [Cleveland, OH: Otto F. Ege, 1938]. Large folio, 60 separately mounted and matted leaves with one title / contents leaf at front, loose as issued in custom cloth portfolio with cloth ties.

Scarce Deluxe "Series B" issue of Otto Ege's extraordinary collection of Bible leaves, including four leaves from 12th to 14th-century manuscript Bibles and 56 leaves from important and beautiful printed Bibles dating from 1476 to 1935, including five from the earliest days of printing, the incunable era (15th century).

"Sixty leaves from famous and rare Bibles and Testaments, dating from the 12th to the 20th century, have been selected to illustrate important changes in content and format. This collection includes Bibles of the manuscript age on vellum and on paper [including a 12th-century Armenian Manuscript Bible and a 13th-century manuscript Bible produced in France]; incunabula editions from Germany and Italy [including the 1476 first Jenson Bible]; epoch-making versions from England [including both the great 'He' and 'She' issues of the first King James Bible] and the Continent during the time of the Reformation [including a suppressed Martin Luther Bible of 1541]; polyglot texts, ranging from three to nine languages [including leaves from the 1655/57 London polyglot]; early American imprints [second edition of the Eliot Indian Bible]; and examples from the finest presses, extending from Jenson to Bruce Rogers [Oxford Lectern Bible, 1935]." Collected by Otto F. Ege of the Cleveland School of Art and the Western Reserve University. Each leaf is mounted and matted separately, with the printed annotations of Professor Ege. Issues of Ege's collection of famous Bible leaves occur with various numbers of leaves, some with 38 or fewer; this is a large collection with 60 leaves (all indexed).

A superb and fascinating survey of great, important and rare Bibles in fine condition.
