"IF EVERYTHING ELSE IN OUR LANGUAGE SHOULD PERISH, IT WOULD ALONE SUFFICE…": 1727 OXFORD KING JAMES BIBLE, WITH CONTEMPORARY BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, ILLUSTRATED WITH OVER 200 ENGRAVINGS

(BIBLE) (BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER). The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments… Oxford: John Baskett, 1727. Thick quarto, late 19th-century full green morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Impressive 1727 Oxford quarto edition of the magisterial King James Bible, illustrated with 204 fine engravings "from designs of the best masters," handsomely bound with a 1726 Book of Common Prayer and metrical psalter.

"If everything else in our language should perish, [the King James Bible] would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (Macaulay). First published in 1611, the King James Bible is "the only literary masterpiece ever to be produced by a committee and was the work of nearly 50 translators… [who] lived at a period when the genius of the language was in full flower" (PMM 114). The 51 engraved plates (believed to be by noted engraver John Sturt), featuring four scenes per plate, were printed and sold separately, intended to be inserted at the appropriate biblical passages, as here. Bound with a 1726 edition of Sternhold and Hopkins' popular metrical psalter at rear. With engraved frontispiece portrait of King George I. With engraved title page for the engravings as well as general Bible and separate New Testament title page (dated 1727 and 1726, respectively). Woodcut initials throughout. Bible not in Darlow & Moule; Herbert 983. Griffiths 1726:3 (prayer book). Old ownership inscriptions.

Interior generally fine, marginal paper repairs and reinforcement to plate facing Old Testament leaf [A8]. Mild wear to Victorian morocco. An excellent illustrated Bible.
