THE KING JAMES BIBLE, 1619, IN EXQUISITE CONTEMPORARY HAND-EMBROIDERED BINDING WITH GOLD AND SILVER THREADS, FEATURING FEMALE FIGURES ON BOTH COVERS

(BIBLE) (BOOK ARTS). The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New. London: Bonham Norton and John Bill, 1619. Thick 12mo, contemporary full white satin fully embroidered in colored silks, silver cords and thread silver braid, all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box.

Early edition of the King James Bible in a splendid contemporary full-embroidered binding, with nicely hand-colored woodcut title page.

This early edition of the magisterial King James Bible, which was first published in 1611, has been lovingly bound in embroidered white satin. On both covers, a woman garbed in robes worked in red, blue, green, brown and gold silks—possibly representing the Virgin Mary—stands beneath a high relief, columned arch worked in gold and silver thread and silver braid. On the front cover the woman holds a blue bird and a cross; on the rear, a sword. Birds worked in green, red and yellow shading-stitch are atop the arches; flowers executed in the same manner adorn the spine. A roll border worked over with silver thread once ornamented the spine and boards; much has worn away over the years. This highly decorative and unusual style of binding reached the height of its popularity and the pinnacle of its artistic development in the first half of the 17th century and is rarely found after the Restoration. The majority of such bindings were the work of professionals, members of the Guild of Embroiderers. Bible bound with an edition from the same year of Sternhold and Hopkins' metrical psalter. With separate wood-engraved New Testament title page. Includes Apocrypha. Text hand-ruled in red throughout. Early hand-coloring to wood-engraved general title page. Darlow & Moule 287. Herbert 369. STC 2257.

Interior generally clean. Expert restoration of bottom corner of title page (somewhat affecting image). A few instances of closed tears and small holes. Mild worming to final few leaves. Remnants of original silk ties present on pastedowns. Expected age-wear to embroidered binding with colors still bright and beautiful. A splendid volume in near-fine condition.
