“THE MOTHER OF THE ENGLISH 19TH-CENTURY NOVEL”: JANE AUSTEN’S NOVELS, ILLUSTRATED AND BEAUTIFULLY BOUND

AUSTEN, Jane. [Novels]. London and New York: Macmillan, 1895-97. Small octavo, mid-20th century three-quarter blue morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.

Late Victorian edition of Austen’s beloved books, with numerous illustrations, beautifully bound by Bayntun-Riviere.

"Generations of readers have marveled at the modernity of her work… She is the mother of the English 19th-century novel as Scott is the father of it" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 23). "She is the only author of her period whose works can be read, and are read, today with delight in their entirety" (Baugh et al., 1206). Contains Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. Each volume with frontispiece and numerous illustrations, most full-page, by Hugh Thomson and Charles E. Brock, and introduction by poet and literary historian Austin Dobson.

Infrequent faint soiling to text; light sunning to front board of Sense and Sensibility. A lovely set in very nearly fine condition.
