"ASIMOV'S BEST NOVEL": FIRST EDITION OF THE GODS THEMSELVES, BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY ASIMOV

ASIMOV, Isaac. The Gods Themselves. Garden City: Doubleday, 1972. Octavo, half yellow cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Asimov's "finest single creation," which earned both the Nebula Award and Hugo Award for Best Novel, inscribed on the title page by him, "To S— S—, Isaac Asimov."

"Gods Themselves, which was only the second genuine singleton [novel] of his career, and which won both Hugo and Nebula awards, proved to be his finest single creation, a complex tale involving catastrophic energy transfers between alternate universes and—rarely for him—intriguing alien beings" (Clute & Nicholls, 57). "Gods Themselves is easily Asimov's best novel. He has often called it his favorite" (Fiedler and Mele, Isaac Asimov, 89). It also "came as a capstone" for Asimov, and was "important as a statement by him that science still could be the distinguishing characteristic of science fiction, that the older traditions of science fiction… could be built upon rather than discarded" (Gunn, Isaac Asimov, 186). "First Edition" on copyright page with no statement of printings; first printing dust jacket with "$5.95" on front panel. Portions serialized in Galaxy Magazine (March-May 1972). Science Fiction and Fantasy I:22. This copy is inscribed by Asimov to the much-beloved bibliophile Stanley Simon, highly regarded for his knowledge of science fiction classics.

A fine inscribed copy.
