La Quintinye, Chief Director of all the gardens of Louis XIV for nearly 40 years, created “the fruit and vegetable gardens at Chantilly, Rambouillet and Versailles… the fame of La Quintinye and his work at Versailles was soon spread far, and he visited England, where he met Evelyn, who later translated his book (in 1693)” ( Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society ).
