LITERATURE 32 “For Justice We Must Go On Our Knees To Don Corleone”: First Edition Of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather 39PUZO, Mario. The Godfather. New York, 1969. Octavo, original half black cloth, dust jacket. $3000 First edition of Puzo’s Cosa Nostra classic in the original dust jacket. In order to better support his family, Puzo-who had written two critically praised but modestly performing books-decided to create a purely commercial novel. Even so, The Godfather not only “outsold every other novel of the 1970s” but also “found favor with most critics” (ANB). Puzo co-wrote the screenplay for the 1972 film, which won three Oscars including Best Screenplay Adaptation for Puzo and director Francis Ford Coppola. First edition, first printing: with no statement of printings on the copyright page. Books of the Century, 266-67. Book fine, dust jacket very good with creasing, tape repairs to verso. “You Do Not Talk About Fight Club”: First Edition Of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club 40PALAHNIUK, Chuck. Fight Club. New York, 1996. Octavo, original half purple cloth, dust jacket. $950 First edition of Palahniuk’s electrifying first novel, in scarce dust jacket. Palahniuk’s first novel received little attention until it was made it a cult favorite by the 1999 film version starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter, which was praised as “visionary and disturbing… The sardonic, testosterone-fueled science fiction of Fight Club touches a raw nerve” (New York Times). Later re-evaluation of the novel noted that it established the “wild, mordant point of view” (New York Times) that would inform Palahniuk’s later writings. “First Edition” on copyright page. Fine condition.
