Early edition of Sendak’s cherished classic, inscribed to a close friend and neighbor: “For Betty—Maurice Sendak July 12, ‘75,” with a large original drawing of Moishe the Wild Thing presenting a birthday cake and saying “Happy Birthday!” First published in 1963, “Sendak’s exploration of the realms of the unconscious in Where the Wild Things Are… lifts his work beyond the confines of the children’s picture book, and places it among the major art of the 20th century” (Carpenter & Prichard, 476-77). Dust jacket with Caldecott sticker to front panel and price of $4.95 (first editions are priced at $3.50). Book near-fine, with interior generally quite nice, just a couple spots of foxing to boards, and slightest toning to extremities. Corner-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with two spots of soiling to rear panel, only light wear to extremities, a bit of toning, and small tape repair to front joint. A most desirable inscribed copy with original drawing.
