“RESTORES HOPE AND A BELIEF IN THE RESILIENCE OF CHILDHOOD”: LIMITED EDITION LITHOGRAPH FOR WE ARE ALL IN THE DUMPS WITH JACK AND GUY, ONE OF 200 SIGNED BY SENDAK

SENDAK, Maurice. Print signed [Lithograph: At Home With Jack and Guy]. Otego, New York and Kingston, New York: Timothy Sheesley, printer and Battledore, publisher, 1999. Oblong folio two-color lithograph measuring 14 by 19-1/2 inches. $1800.

Signed limited original two-stone color lithograph, number 125 of only 200 prints signed by Sendak, illustrating his 1993 book We Are All In The Dumps With Jack and Guy.

Sendak, “widely considered the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century… wrenched the picture book out of the safe, sanitized world of the nursery and plunged it into the dark, terrifying and hauntingly beautiful recesses of the human psyche” (New York Times). Sendak drew this fine lithograph on stone in 1993 for a deluxe version of his book, We Are All In The Dumps With Jack And Guy (New York: Harper Collins). “Amidst a cardboard city landscape of poverty and despair,” wrote scholar Iona Opie of this print, “Maurice Sendak restores hope and a belief in the resilience of Childhood—brilliantly rendered in the grand tradition of 19th century stone lithography.” In 1999, Battledore obtained permission to publish the lithograph. Corridor Press produced a limited edition of 200 numbered and signed copies (with an additional 38 copies done as trial proofs, artist proofs, hors commerce and bon à tirer). Accompanied by Corridor Press documentation.

A fine signed piece, suitable for framing.
