Portraits

Richard Avedon

BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY AVEDON, FIRST EDITION OF PORTRAITS, WITH OVER 60 PHOTOGRAVURE PLATES

AVEDON, Richard. Portraits. New York: Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, (1976). Quarto, original light gray cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $950.

First edition of Avedon’s famed work that reinvented photographic portraiture, signed by him and dated “79,” with over 60 finely screened black-and-white photogravure plates (four folding), in scarce dust jacket.

Avedon initially achieved fame as a fashion photographer, yet “it is his portraits, stark and penetrating, which have won the greatest acclaim among collectors” (Blodgett, 102). In fundamentally reshaping portraiture, “Avedon’s images demand that we look at them.” First edition, published in conjunction with his “landmark exhibition, Portraits, at the Marlborough Gallery in New York in 1975” (Promenade). See Roth, 148; Parr & Badger I:252, II:38.

Only faint toning to spine of dust jacket. An about-fine inscribed copy.
