Polo At Home And Abroad

T. F. Dale

POLO AT HOME AND ABROAD: DELUXE LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 100 COPIES PRINTED FOR SUBSCRIBERS

DALE, T. F. Polo At Home And Abroad. London: The London and Counties Press Association, 1915. Large quarto, original full vellum, white moire endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $5800.

Handsome deluxe limited edition, number 11 of only 100 copies printed for subscribers, illustrated with 53 full-page plates, including six beautiful tissue-guarded color halftone photoengravings mounted on heavy linen-texture paper, each reproduced from original watercolor drawings done especially for this work by noted sporting and animal painter, G. D. Armour. Also included are 40 plates of halftone photo-engravings and seven plates of heliogravure etchings.

“The colored pictures by Mr. Armour are excellent, not only for their artistic merits but also because the artist’s knowledge of horses and his gift of giving to the correct attitudes of the horse life and movement, cannot fail to be useful to all interested in Polo ponies as showing vividly the stress and strain to the pony occasioned by modern Polo” (Introduction). Author of a number of books on horsemanship and Polo, T.F. Dale, with contributions from other authorities, here traces the history of English Polo and focuses on the changes and developments brought about in the game. Dale details the expansion of Polo through England and abroad, and attempts to show how the game itself has been modified in strokes, tactics, and combination. Podeschi 317.

Foxing to blank flyleaves only; text and plates clean and fine. Boards slightly bowed, but vellum clean and very nearly fine. A lovely copy of this scarce and desirable title.
