MAP OF FAIRMOUNT PARK, PHILADELPHIA, 1868

PHILADELPHIA. Maps of Farms and Lots Embraced within the limits of Fairmount Park as appropriated for public use by act of assembly approved the 14th day of April A.D 1868. Philadelphia, 1868. Map measures 21 by 26-1/2 inches, printed in green and black; framed, entire piece measures 27 by 32-1/2 inches. $850.

Victorian map of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia shortly before its transformation as the site of the Centennial Exhibition in 1876.

Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park was brought into official existence by city council ordinance in 1855; in 1876, it was the site of the Centennial Exhibition, the first World’s Fair held in the United States, hosting about 10 million visitors. This 1868 map shows the park and surrounding areas before much of the transformation caused by the Exhibition; in addition to still listing the names of the farmsteads in what is now parkland, the street grid displayed west of the park is almost completely different today. With inset maps of “Landsdowne Land Company Lots in the 24th Ward,” “Lot of the Mifflin Land Association 20th Ward,” and “Plan of the Ground Appropriated for the Preservation of the Purity of Water” (site of the Philadelphia Museum of Art today).

Fold lines. Beautifully framed.
