Anglican missionary Henry Martyn, “the learned and the holy, translating the Scriptures in his solitary bungalow” (Sir James Stephen), prepared the first Urdu edition of the complete New Testament, which saw print in 1814. In 1842 the Benares Translation Committee issued a revision of Martyn’s version (simplifying the text’s more difficult Persian and Arabic terms), of which the present text is a revised version.
