SIGNED BY HUMPHREY SPENDER, WITH OVER 100 OF HIS PHOTOGRAPHS

SPENDER, Humphrey. Worktown People. Photographs from Northern England 1937-38. (Bristol, England): Falling Wall Press, (1995). Oblong quarto, original stiff paper wrappers. $175.

Second edition, signed by Spender on the half title, with over 100 black-and-white photographs, most by Spender, of life in working-class Bolton in England.

The brother of poet Stephen Spender, Humphrey began work as a commercial photographer; in the 1930s, he became involved in the Mass Observation movement in England, which attempted to collect information on the everyday lives of ordinary people through a variety of methods, including photography. “A major project was the study of Bolton—‘Worktown’—and as a part of this, a number of well-known artists were invited to provide their own kinds of record of Bolton and its ‘leisure extension,’ Blackpool. Today, Humphrey Spender’s photographs are the most famous result” (Worktown People, 1). Includes an interview with Spender and his notes on individual photographs at the end. First published in 1982. Additional name in ink on half title.

Interior fine, only light wear to original wrappers.
