Life of Daniel O'Connell, The Liberator

Mary Francis Cusack

CUSACK, M(ary) F(rances). Life of Daniel O’Connell, The Liberator. His Times—Political, Social, and Religious. New York: D. & J. Sadlier, 1872. Thick quarto, original three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and front board, raised bands, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. $500.

First edition, American issue, with chromolithographic frontispiece and title page.

Mary Frances Cusack, commonly known as the Nun of Kenmare, wrote more than 50 books during her lifetime, the most important of which were histories of Ireland. This biography of Daniel O’Connell, the great advocate for Catholic emancipation and great foe of the Act of Union, is dedicated “to the Catholic priests and to the Catholic people of America.” Featuring numerous engraved illustrations, with text leafs printed within elaborate illustrated borders. As with most of Cusack’s works, there was also an Irish edition published the same year by “Kenmare Publications,” no priority established. Early gift inscription.

Scattered faint dampstaining, light wear to extremities of elaborate publisher’s morocco. An extremely good copy.
