Autograph postcard - Signed

Eleanor Roosevelt

AUTOGRAPH POSTCARD WRITTEN AND SIGNED BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT DURING HER 1952 TRIP TO INDIA

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. Autograph postcard signed. India, 1952. Printed photographic postcard, measuring 5-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches, inked manuscript hand on verso, stamps and postmarks above address. $3600.

Printed photographic postcard depicting the Lahori Gate in Fort Delhi addressed entirely in Eleanor Roosevelt’s hand to a Mr. Robert Largo and with a message also written by Roosevelt that reads: “Dear Mr. Largo, Thank you for your wise note. Very Sincerely. Eleanor Roosevelt.”

This wonderful autograph postcard was written during Eleanor Roosevelt’s trip through Asia in 1952. Her travels took her through the Middle East, then to Pakistan, then India, and finally to Nepal. Ultimately, her favorable impressions helped to influence America’s perceptions of India as both a potential democracy and as a potential ally. In a speech, Roosevelt said, “So I've come back with tremendous hope that India is going to be the country of Asia”—a statement that had consequences for India’s future in trade and politics. With two India stamps affixed to verso and usual postal markings.

A fine autograph signed item.
