“A DEATHLESS NICHE IN THE TEMPLE OF FAME”

DICKENS, Charles. Works: "The Fireside Dickens." London and New York: Chapman & Hall and Henry Frowde (Horace Hart, printer), [1903-07]. Twenty-two volumes bound in twenty. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter blue calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and partly unopened. $2500.

“The Fireside Dickens,” a complete set of Dickens’ perennially popular and beloved novels and stories— including such incomparable classics as The Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol— illustrated with hundreds of engravings by Cruikshank, “Phiz,” and others, handsomely bound by Morrell.

"His imaginative freshness, his deep and sincere tenderness and pity, his whole-souled humor that is seldom sharpened into wit, his superabundance of creative energy, have built a deathless niche in the temple of fame for Charles Dickens" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 184). This set includes all of Dickens' major works, including The Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Hard Times, Oliver Twist, and David Copperfield. Harvey, Victorian Novelists and Their Illustrators, 196-99. Pencil annotations to endpapers of Pickwick.

Occasional very faint foxing to endpapers, plates and text clean and fine. Four volumes with light wear to front boards, joints tender on a few volumes with a bit of restoration, spines toned to brown. A handsome set.
