Eighth edition of this account of Jesus and his Apostles, generously illustrated with 116 engravings (16 full-page), beautifully bound.

Chaplain to King Charles II, Cave "is said to have been 'of a learned and communicative conversation;' he is also reported to have been 'a florid and eloquent preacher… But his fame rests upon his writings on church history, which are voluminous and valuable" (DNB), including this work, which consists of two parts: Bishop Jeremy Taylor's life of Jesus, The Great Exemplar (first published 1649); and Cave's continuation of it, Antiquitates Apostloicæ (first published 1675). "Dr. Cave's work requires to be consulted by men of all ecclesiastical views" (Allibone, 356). Illustrated with 16 full-page engravings (two double-page) and 100 engraved vignettes; also with decorative woodcut headpieces and initials. Hand-ruled in red throughout. Wing C1589A; T288A. Lowndes, 2585. Several old owner signatures and inscriptions; embossed ownership stamps to first several leaves; occasional marginalia.

Folding plate between leaves K2 and K3 expertly repaired. Occasional light foxing and soiling. Closed tear to first leaf (tape repairs to verso); occasional small paper restorations to margins and gutters. Light expert restoration to beautiful contemporary calf; gilt bright. An excellent copy in distinguished binding.
