International Economics

Roy Forbes Harrod

FIRST EDITION OF HARROD’S INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS, 1933

HARROD, Roy Forbes. International Economics. London: Nisbet, 1933. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $950.

First edition of this economics standard, containing some observations (not present in subsequent editions) that would foreshadow later theories such as the BalassaSamuelson effect, with an introduction by J.M. Keynes.

Known primarily for the Harrod-Domar model of his later career, “the two slender books that Harrod published in the 1930s, namely International Economics (1933) and The Trade Cycle (1936), staked out the area of his principal economic interest. Business cycles were already explained in a Keynesian spirit by the interaction of the acceleration principle with the multiplier, but without an explicit model” (Niehans, 453). International Economics was, for decades, considered a standard economics textbook and continues to be regarded as one of the best and most coherent works of economics from the post-Crash/pre-War era. Bookseller ticket. Neat pencil underlining and annotations and a few blue pencil markings.

Book near-fine, with light foxing to edges of text and cloth fine. Rare dust jacket near-fine, with only slight rubbing and toning to extremities.
