“Artist’s” edition, number 633 of 750 sets, illustrated with hand-colored frontispieces in each volume and steel-engraved portraits and photogravures throughout.

Father of the celebrated jurist of the same name, Holmes (1809-94) “reigned supreme in Boston society and club life and became the unofficial poet laureate of all important gatherings in the intellectual “hub of the Universe” (Hart, 176).
