James P. Cockburn

(SWITZERLAND) COCKBURN, James P. Swiss Scenery. London: Rodwell & Martin, 1820. Quarto, contemporary full blue pebbled morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated covers and spine, tan morocco inlays on covers, raised bands, watered silk endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $2200.

As a young cadet, career military officer Major-General James P. Cockburn (1779-1847) was a pupil of Paul Sandby, who was many years professor of landscape-drawing at the Royal Military Academy. Cockburn “became a very accomplished artist. During periods of leave… he executed many drawings of continental scenery, which were engraved and published under the titles of Swiss Scenery (London, 1820), Views of the Valley of Aosta (London, 1822), et al.… These drawings supplied the continental ‘scenes’ for illustrated editions, annuals, and similar works of various descriptions for long afterwards… Cockburn was in the habit of using the camera lucida to insure exactness of landscape detail” (DNB). Bookplate.

Minor discoloration to front cover. A few spots of foxing to engraved title page and margins of several plates, images and text generally clean. A beautifully bound copy in extremely good condition.
