Novels and Stories

Frank R. Stockton

“…AN AUTHOR WITH A FAMILY OF GROWN-UP BOOKS SHOULD BE GLAD TO SEE THEM GATHERED TOGETHER IN REUNION…”: ELEGANT LIMITED EDITION OF STOCKTON’S NOVELS AND STORIES, ONE OF ONLY 204 SETS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR

STOCKTON, Frank R. The Novels and Stories. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1899-1904. Twenty-three volumes. Octavo, contemporary full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, brown and blue morocco gilt doublures, watered silk free endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $4500.

Signed limited “Shenandoah Edition,” number 49 of 204 sets printed on Japan paper, with frontispiece portrait signed by Stockton in Volume I, handsomely bound.

“A prolific author who commanded international popularity and critical respect during his writing career… In the 1880s Stockton’s name was as famous as Mark Twain’s” (ANB). “It is true that ‘The Lady, or the Tiger?’, Rudder Grange and The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine are among Stockton’s best works, but these are by no means all of Stockton’s finer stories,” as this comprehensive and handsomely bound collection demonstrates (Griffin, v.). With frontispiece illustration in each volume, that in Volume I signed by Stockton.

Tiny abrasion to rear board of Volume 15. A fine set.
