Vlaminck

Maurice de Vlaminck

FIVE ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS BY VLAMINCK (ONE DOUBLE-PAGE AND IN 15 COLORS)

(VLAMINCK, Maurice de) MAC ORLAN, Pierre. Vlaminck. New York: Universe Books (André Sauret), (1958). Folio (10 by 12-1/2 inches), original illustrated French-folded wrappers, original acetate, original slipcase. $1200.

Limited first edition, number 420 of 2,000 copies, of this wide-ranging retrospective of Vlaminck’s work, with four original black-and-white lithographs and one 15-color double-page lithograph entitled “The Road.”

“No one else had his muscularity, his punch, his vitality… With his common sense, his noisy enthusiasm, his taste for uproarious practical jokes, his intoxication with color, his lyrical interpretation of reality, Vlaminck boldly trod the earth ploughed by Vincent” (Hazan, 319). The illustrations in this volume reflect Vlaminck’s artistic development, including his later style, “an expressionism that has, with time, drifted toward an inveterate realism” (Hazan, 320). They depict river scenes, rural landscapes and eight still-lifes, as well as two self-portraits and a portrait of his daughter Madeleine. The original lithographs were pulled in Paris by the legendary Mourlot Frères atelier. Fernand Mourlot established a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, and Picasso came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. Mourlot’s printing of Vlaminck’s “The Road” in this volume was “supervised by the artist in collaboration with Charles Sorlier.”

A lovely limited edition, in fine condition, with only a few small marks to original slipcase.
