“THE PAINTER OF FEMALE SENSUALITY”: ÉDOUARD CHIMOT’S 18 WONDERFUL COLOR LITHOGRAPHS FOR LADY CHATTERLEY

(CHIMOT, Édouard) LAWRENCE, D.H. Lady Chatterley. (Paris): Deux-Rives (Ferdinand Cahour, 1950). Thick quarto, 43 loose gatherings and 18 loose plates, in original illustrated cream French-folded paper covers, original glassine wrapper. $1400.

Illustrated limited edition, number 951 of 1,153 copies, of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley, with 18 full-page color lithographs and numerous in-text line cuts by Chimot.

Influenced by Lautrec, Renoir, Rodin and later the Symbolists, Édouard Chimot taught himself painting and directed his talent primarily to etching, often for fine private-press limited editions. Best known for his voluptuous erotic images, he has been called “the painter of feminine sensuality” (Slatkine). Chimot reached his artistic height during the 1920s and early 30s. He had become a significant figure in the Paris art world, with a public “hungry for his late-Symbolist nudes, ‘soumises à leurs passions mortelles et délicieuses” (André Warnod). Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley fit Chimot’s taste precisely. Text in French. Slatkine Beaux Livres, Livres Illustrés 1900-1930.

A fine copy.
