Satiricon

Titus Petronius arbiter

WITH TEN POCHOIR ILLUSTRATIONS BY GEORGES LEPAPE

PETRONIUS ARBITER, Titus. Le Satiricon. Paris: Émile Chamontin, (1941). Octavo, contemporary full green morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers. $500.

French private press limited edition of Petronius’ Satyricon, number 2805 of 3225 copies, illustrated with ten erotic pochoir plates by Georges Lepape.

Petronious' novel is "a sort of comic romance, in which the adventures of a certain Encolpius and his companions in the south of Italy, chiefly in Puteoli or its environs, are made a vehicle for exposing the false taste and vices of the age. Unfortunately the vices of the personages introduced are depicted with such fidelity that we are perpetually disgusted by the obscenity of the descriptions" (Peck, 1220). French illustrator and costume designer Lepape was known for his fashion illustrations, which appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Text in French; translated from the Latin by Laurent Tailhade. With red head- and tailpieces and historiated initials.

Occasional scattered light foxing to interior; plates bright and fine. Light rubbing to morocco extremities. A near-fine copy.
