Deuxieme Guerre Mondiale: L'orage Approche

Winston Churchill

INSCRIBED BY WINSTON CHURCHILL IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION: THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE FRENCH TRANSLATION OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1948

CHURCHILL, Winston S. La Deuxième Guerre Mondiale: L’orage Approche. Paris: Librairie Plon, (1948). Octavo, original blue paper wrappers, uncut and unopened. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.

First edition, early printing of Volume I of the French translation of Churchill’s landmark memoir, The Second World War, inscribed in the year of publication, “A Nicole de Winston S. Churchill, 1948.”

Published between 1948 and 1954, “The Second World War is a great work of literature, combining narrative, historical imagination and moral precept in a form that bears comparison with that of the original master chronicler, Thucydides. It was wholly appropriate that in 1953 Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature” (Keegan, 175). The French edition of The Second World War was “notable for Churchill’s additional remarks in the foreword to Volume I, exonerating the French poilu from the débacle of 1940” (Langworth, 279). The first printing of this edition was made up of only 2210 numbered copies. The French edition was published in 12 volumes, breaking each of the six English volumes into two. This volume is thus the first half of the first English volume. Without scarce photographic dust jacket.

Pages embrowned; light wear and toning to extremities of paper wrapper. A near-fine copy, most scarce inscribed by Churchill.
