Map of the Peninsula of India

F.H. Scott

VERY LARGE 1855 ENGRAVED AND HAND-COLORED MAP OF INDIA, 40 BY 52 INCHES

(INDIA) SCOTT, F.H. Map of the Peninsula of India, Comprising the Whole of the Madras Presidency, and Portions of the Adjacent Territories of Bengal and Bombay. [London]: J. & C. Walker, 1855. Octavo, original red cloth rebacked, marbled endpapers; map sectioned and backed on linen, unfolds to 40-1/2 by 52 inches. $1700.

Lovely large folding map of the Madras Presidency in India at the peak of its power and territorial extent, along with portions of the Bengal and Bombay territories, finely engraved and hand-colored.

This 1855 map represents the Madras Presidency at its zenith under the British East India Company. Two years later, after the Sepoy Mutiny (which left Madras largely undisturbed), Queen Victoria ended the Company rule over India and established the British Raj. J.S. Harvey drew this map based on the surveys conducted by Major F.H. Scott, Deputy Quartermaster-General of the Madras Army. Early owner signature and initials, with initials also on front cover.

Original cloth expertly restored; sectioned map backed on linen unfolds easily. Excellent condition. Scarce.
