Classics and Moderns

John R. Hicks

FIRST EDITION OF CLASSICS AND MODERNS, INSCRIBED BY HICKS TO DISTINGUISHED ECONOMIST JOHN MATHIS

HICKS, John R. Classics and Moderns. Collected Essays on Economic Theory Volume III. (Oxford, England): Basil Blackwell, (1983). Octavo, original full burgundy paper boards, original dust jacket. $1100.

First edition of this compelling work attempting to connect classical theories of economics with their modern descendants, inscribed to a well-known economist: “John Mathis from John Hicks.”

This work attempts to show how the theories of great economists such as Ricardo and Mill relate to the later theories of economists such as Marshall and Walras and even their successors. Hicks’ scholarly works are considered to be of substantial importance to anyone engaged in the study of economics. “One of the most important and influential economists of the 20th century, the trail of the eternally eclectic John Hicks is found all over economic theory… The quintessential ‘economist’s economist,’ Hicks cannot be said to have founded a ‘school… If any, his school was ‘economics… Hicks’ scholarly output is a perfect demonstration of how economics should be done: without partisanship for pet theories, without ideological quibbling, his own strictest critic, learning from all and everywhere, constantly searching for new ideas and staying glued to none… No economist, before or since Hicks, has achieved such ‘Olympian’ scholarship” (Fonseca). “Hicks will probably appear in the history of economics as the greatest British theorist of the century” (Niehans, 371). Hicks was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 1972. The person to whom this copy is inscribed, John Mathis, is an economist who was previously affiliated with The World Bank/International Finance Corp. He served as both a senior portfolio officer and a senior financial analyst. Prior to that, he was an international economist at several major financial institutions. Mathis was credited with developing the legacy country-risk-evaluation systems for those banks. Mathis has also published several economics works in his field.

A fine signed copy.
