WHYTE-MELVILLE, George John. Works. London: Ward, Lock, circa 1900. Twenty-five volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $2800.

Famous for his captivating stories of country sporting life, Whyte-Melvillle (1821-78) also wrote a valuable work on horsemanship (Riding Recollections), historical novels, and memorable poetry. “His books, with their stamp of authenticity, their frequent poetic charm, their liveliness, and their chivalric ideals” attracted many readers in— and out— of the sporting class (Kunitz & Haycraft, 655).

Occasional scattered light foxing. A most handsome set.
