William Drummond

“MON CHER GARÇON, I T’INK OF YOU—T’INK OF YOU NIGHT AND DAY…”

DRUMMOND, William. The Habitant. WITH: The Voyageur. WITH: Johnnie Courteau. WITH: The Great Fight. New York and London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1902-05. Four volumes. Octavo, modern three-quarter brown morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut. $1100.

Very handsomely bound collection of volumes by this noted Canadian poet.

Born in Ireland, Drummond's childhood in French-speaking Quebec strongly influenced his poetry, filled with Quebecois dialect and backwoods characters. "Few dialect poets have succeeded in equal measure with Drummond in capturing at once the salient and concealed characteristics of the persons whom they portray. Drummond's habitant, although using an alien speech, faithfully presents a highly interesting racial type. His humorous exaggeration of eccentricities never passes into unkindly caricature" (DNB). With illustrations in each volume by Frederick Simpson Coburn.

Fine condition.
