Early 19th-century edition of Smollett’s first novel, illustrated by George Cruikshank, handsomely bound by Morrell.

Smollett's rollicking and partly autobiographical picareque novel, modeled in part on Don Quixote (which Smollett had recently translated), was first published in 1748. This edition with five engraved plates after illustrations by acclaimed caricaturist George Cruikshank. "Enthusiasts for his work now confidently describe him as 'the greatest of English illustrators" (Ray, 69).
