First edition, third printing, of this collection of nine biographical sketches of famous Victorian women, divided into two sections focusing on the “real” and the “ideal,” with eight full-page illustrations, handsomely bound.

This work profiles nine well-known Victorian women, offering a wealth of biographical details on their lives. The “real” section covers Jane Welsh Carlyle, Catherine Gladstone, Mary Arnold, Mary Anne Disraeli, Emily Tennyson, and Emily Palmerston, while the “ideal” section focuses on Lady Muriel James, Sophia Swinburne, and Julie de Goncourt. The first edition was published earlier the same year.
