A respected historian, prolific French author G. Lenôtre, better known under his real name Théodore Gosselin, gained a favorable reputation among his peers for his works dealing with the French Revolution. He was particularly focused on the Reign of Terror and many of his works became primary sources in the years that followed. By the end of his life, he had been made an officer of the Légion d’honneur and been elected to Académie française.
