North-West Peninsula of Iceland

C.W. Shepherd

“AN ACCOUNT OF ICELANDIC LIFE AND SCENERY… NEW OR NOT UNINTERESTING”

SHEPHERD, C.W. The North-West Peninsula of Iceland: Being the Journal of a Tour in Iceland in the Spring and Summer of 1862. London: Longmans, Green, 1867. 12mo, original green cloth gilt. $500.

First edition of Shepherd’s account of his second trip to Iceland, illustrated with two hand-colored aquatint plates and folding map, in original cloth.

Shepherd made his second journey to Iceland, he explains in his preface, "to explore the North-West Peninsula and the Vatna Jökull… Although I was unable fully to accomplish my purposes, I still believe… that Icelandic travelers and perhaps others will be interested in perusing an account of a part of Iceland which has not yet been described." With two hand-colored aquatint plates (one the frontispiece) and folding map of Iceland (heightened with hand-coloring). Bookplate. Small institutional blindstamp.

Text block expertly repaired. Cloth with light rubbing to spine ends, light soiling to edges, corners lightly bumped. A very good copy.
