Winter in the Azores

Joseph and Henry Bullar

“OF ALL THE TOURS AND TRAVELS… THE MOST AGREEABLE AND ORIGINAL”

BULLAR, Joseph and Henry. A Winter in the Azores; and a Summer at the Baths of the Furnas. London: John Van Voorst, 1841. Two volumes. Octavo, original blind-decorated cloth rebacked with original spines laid down. $850.

First edition, with hand-colored frontispiece in each volume and numerous in-text illustrations.

A contemporary review praised the Bullars' record of their journey to the Azores, "in search of a warm and equable climate," "of all the Tours and Travels we have ever read… the most agreeable and original" (Allibone, 280). Illustrated with hand-colored engraved frontispiece in each volume and many in-text woodcut vignettes. Bookplates, including the amusing, imprecatory bookplate of collector C.J. Peacock ("Who folds a leaf downe, ye devil toaste browne…").

Occasional light foxing. Original cloth with light toning to spines, light rubbing to boards. A very good copy.
