Sparring with Hemingway

Budd Schulberg

SCHULBERG, Budd. Sparring with Hemingway and Other Legends of the Fight Game. Chicago: Ivan R. Dee, 1995. Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $275.

First edition of this collection of Schulberg’s “‘takes’ on the Sweet Science,” inscribed, “For Bonnie, with all good wishes, Bud Schulberg, Princeton— 9/20/96.”

Screenwriter, novelist and boxing fan, Schulberg followed the success of his Hollywood novel What Makes Sammy Run? (1941) with his critically praised look at corruption in the world of boxing, The Harder They Fall (1947). Since then he produced more than 150 articles on the Sweet Science, “from ‘The Great’ Benny Leonard to Muhammad Ali to George Foreman: memorable personalities and their unforgettable fights… His stories capture the sights, sounds, and sometimes even the smells of the fight game.” This compilation of Schulberg’s “takes” on the greatest bouts was selected by Nick Beck, noted collector of boxiana.

A fine, inscribed copy.
