Elizabeth Joceline

“THE TRUE REASON I HAVE SO OFTEN KNEELED TO GOD FOR THEE, IS THAT THOU MIGHTEST BE AN INHERITOR OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN”

JOCELINE, Elizabeth. The Mother's Legacy to Her Unborn Child. London and New York: Macmillan, 1894. 12mo, contemporary full crushed brown morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $600.

Late Victorian-era edition, representing the 1632 edition, of Elizabeth Joceline’s heartfelt exhortation on religion and morality, handsomely bound by Roger de Coverley.

"Foreboding death in childbirth, [Joceline] wrote The Mother's Legacie to her Unborne Childe, a letter which gently but earnestly exhorts her son or daughter to piety and good conduct. Prefixed to it is a letter to her husband, giving him sensible advice as to the bringing up of the child. She bore a daughter [named Theodora] on October 12, 1622 and died nine days afterwards… The manuscript of the Legacie is now in the British Museum" (DNB). First published in 1624; this edition reprinted from the sixth printing (1632).

Front inner paper hinge expertly reinforced. A fine copy, handsomely bound.
