Edmund Spenser

“THE POET’S POET”

SPENSER, Edmund. The Poetical Works. Boston: Houghton, Osgood, 1880. Five volumes in three. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter green calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red morocco spine labels, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $800.

"Spenser's influence on English poetic literature cannot be readily over-estimated… 'No other of our poets,' wrote James Russell Lowell, 'has given an impulse, and in the right direction also, to so many and so diverse minds.' Charles Lamb bestowed on Spenser his just title when he described him as 'the poet's poet" (DNB). With notes by American scholar Francis J. Child, the first individual to hold the title of Professor of English at Harvard University, best known for his compilation English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1882-98). This edition first published in 1855.

Occasional scattered light foxing to interiors. Light rubbing to calf extremities. A handsome set in near-fine condition.
