Portraits from The Americans

Daniel J. Boorstin

INSCRIBED BY DANIEL BOORSTIN

BOORSTIN, Daniel J. Portraits from The Americans: The Democratic Experience. New York: Random House, (1975). Large quarto, original half burgundy cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. $450.

First edition, issued to commemorate the acclaimed National Portrait Gallery exhibit of the same name and in tribute to Dr. Boorstin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning history, inscribed by him, “For Jane Engelhard—this little inscription—with affection, from Daniel Boorstin, October 6, 1976,” with over 200 illustrations, housed in a custom chemise and slipcase.

This wonderfully illustrated volume brings to life the richness of Daniel Boorstin’s Americans: The Democratic Experience, which won him the 1973 Pulitzer Prize in History. As Boorstin notes in his introduction, Portraits and its corresponding exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery tell “in ways more vivid and more direct the story which I have unfolded in The Americans… These are the men and women whose ingenuity and rivalry, imagination and stick-to-it-iveness brought forth a newly democratic world.”

A fine inscribed copy.
