First edition of Nobel laureate Myrdal’s key analysis of international economic relations, inscribed by him in the year of publication, “Tony Gilpin, comrade in arms: I feel proud but a little shameful that you have spent money on my book, Gunnar Myrdal, Geneva, Dec. 16th, 1956.”

Gunnar Myrdal, who shared the 1974 Nobel Prize in Economics with Hayek, was "a leader, in thought and action" who placed particular emphasis throughout his career on the need for reforms within underdeveloped countries and across developed countries that would "make contributions to overcoming internal difficulties. In the prescient An International Economy, he had developed the idea that national integration led to international disintegration" (Sills, 576-7). "We cannot hesitate," Myrdal writes herein, "if we have taken to heart the basic ideals of democracy… Only when all these underprivileged nations… have risen to equality of opportunity will the world become integrated." As the Nobel Committee observed, Myrdal demonstrated, with considerable foresight and expertise, "his eminent ability to combine economic analysis with a wide social science approach."
