Statistics of the Foreign and Domestic Commerce

James Garfield

SCARCE ASSOCIATION COPY FROM THE LIBRARY OF PRESIDENT JAMES A. GARFIELD

(GARFIELD, James) (SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY). Statistics of the Foreign and Domestic Commerce of the United States… In Answer to a Resolution of the Senate… March 12, 1863. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1864. Octavo, original green cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2200.

First edition of this statistical report on commerce in the United States, compiled for Congress, a scarce association copy from the library of James A. Garfield, Representative from Ohio and President of the United States, with his bookplate.

Garfield was elected Representative of Ohio’s 19th District in 1863, and was repeatedly reelected until he was elected President. During his tenure “his interests shifted to matters of financial policy. He advocated lower tariffs… and was an avid crusader for hard money. He worked tenaciously for these policies on the House Ways and Means Committee and as chairman of the Appropriations Committee during the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses” (ANB). With a folding map of the United States showing railroad lines, and the acreage and population of each state.

A scarce and desirable association copy in fine condition, with presidential provenance.
