“AND WHAT A FEAST IT WAS!”
(SEWELL, Helen, illustrator) DALGLIESH, Alice. The Thanksgiving Story. New York: Charles Scribner’s Son, (1954). Quarto, original pictorial red cloth, original dust jacket. $200.
First edition of this charmingly illustrated recounting of the Pilgrims, the Indians and their first, famous Thanksgiving feast.
“This much-needed Thanksgiving picture book tells the story of one family during their first year in the Plymouth Colony” (contemporary review, New York Times). Alice Dalgliesh was not only a children’s author but also one of the pioneering editors in the field: “her department [at Charles Scribner and Sons] quietly captured the industry’s respect and more than a few of its accolades” (Marcus, 123). With numerous illustrations, most in color and many full-page, by Helen Sewell, who also illustrated some Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books. The Thanksgiving Story was selected as a Caldecott Honor Book.
A bright and lovely copy in fine condition.
