First edition of this richly illustrated survey of artists’ books, number 25 of only 75 copies printed on Madagascar paper, of a total edition of only 225. Handsomely bound by Iseux Sc. de Thierry Simier.

Hesse covers the years 1820 to 1926, divided into three periods: the Romantic, Pre-War and Post-War. More than a survey of the artists and their methods, Hesse also discusses the editors, book 'architects,' and the various societies of bibliophiles that stimulated the production of artists' books during this very fruitful period in France.
