Beaver Men

Mari Sandoz

“THOUSANDS, TENS AND MANY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS WOULD FOLLOW”

SANDOZ, Mari. The Beaver Men. Spearheads of Empire. WITH: Area of the Richer Beaver Harvest of North America. New York: Hastings House/James F. Carr, 1964. Two volumes. Octavo, original half brown morocco gilt, raised bands, uncut and unopened (Beaver Men); original brown cloth, pp. 16, with large map laid in measuring 32 by 40 inches (Richer Beaver Harvest). Housed together in original cloth slipcase. $1750.

Signed limited first edition, number 38 of 185 signed copies. Also with two original typed manuscript pages signed by Sandoz bound in, and a wonderful large color map also signed by her.

Beaver Men is the ninth volume in Hastings House's "American Procession Series," and the sixth in Sandoz's own "Trans-Missouri Series," the series of works on the history of the Great Plains which she had planned to write since her early childhood in Nebraska. "Sandoz's histories are based on meticulous research, often from esoteric sources, but because she chose to write them as narratives, they read like fiction and thus have drawn criticism from some historians. Nevertheless, writers interested in the West often have relied on her material. Recent researchers in fields as diverse as western American history, sociology, and criminal justice have verified the authenticity of much of her work" (ANB).

A fine copy.
