One of the first American literary naturalists, Crane scandalized literary society with Maggie, his grim tale of Bowery poverty and prostitution, in 1893; two years later, The Red Badge of Courage garnered him international praise for the realism of his battle depictions. Includes both Crane’s poetry and prose. With introductions by writers and scholars, including Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, H.L. Mencken, Joseph Hergesheimer, Amy Lowell and Carl Van Doren.
