“GET IN FAST, GET IN CLOSE AND GET OUT FAST”: FIRST EDITION OF GO, SIGNED BY BRUCE GILDEN

GILDEN, Bruce. Go. London: Trebruk, 2000. Slim folio, original red debossed cloth. $500.

First edition of Gilden’s photobook of physical “standouts” in Japanese street life, signed by him on the imprint page, with 64 rich photogravures (many double-page) by this explosive, “confrontational New York member of Magnum… an original voice in his own right” (Parr & Badger).

Brooklyn-born Bruce Gilden is “a street photographer, a confrontational New York member of Magnum, whose modus operandi is to get in fast, get in close and get out fast… Gilden remains a distinctive photographer, with much that marks him as an original voice in his own right” (Parr & Badger). In Go, Gilden “presents another side to the traditional and often stereotypical view of Japanese society, one where not everything is high technology and poverty is rife… [Here] is an assortment of homeless men and women, day workers, Yakuza (members of traditional organized crime groups in Japan), right-wing nationalists, and Bosozoku— a subculture in which groups of young people share a common interest in designing and driving modified cars and motorcycles” (Magnum). See Parr & Badger II, 310.

A fine signed copy.
