“A heroic figure in American photography, Smith created photo essays so compelling in their power that it can be said his work changed, as well as documented, history” (McDarrah, 457). “His work, imbued with moral fervor, evinces a clear difference between good and evil, the individual’s ability to transcend his or her circumstances, [and] the inherent goodness (even heroism) in people” (Fred Ritchin). This handsome exhibition catalogue “pays homage [to Smith]… Homage, but also confrontation of his work with that of the twelve recipients [of the Smith Foundation grants]” (Claude Collard). Text in French and English. Issued simultaneously in Paris. From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper’s Magazine, who has covered “almost every important international news event of the last 15 years” (New York Times), with his signature.
